Nicole Kidman: Being married to Tom Cruise protected me from sexual harassment

Being married to Tom Cruise offered Nicole Kidman “protection” from sexual harassment, she said in a new interview.

The Australian actress and Cruise met on the set of “Days of Thunder” in 1990, and they married that year when she was 22 and he was 28.

“Being married to Tom Cruise at 22 is something I’m always reluctant to talk about, because I’m married now to the man who is my great love [Keith Urban], and it almost feels disrespectful,” Kidman, 51, said to New York magazine’s The Cut in an interview published Monday.

“That said, I got married very young, but it definitely wasn’t power for me — it was protection,” Kidman continued.

“I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed. I would work, but I was still very much cocooned. So when I came out of it at 32, 33, it’s almost like I had to grow up.”

The couple – who adopted two children, Isabella, now 25, and Connor, now 23 – divorced in 2001, with Cruise citing irreconcilable differences.

Kidman, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in “The Hours” in 2003, married Urban in 2006, They have two daughters together, Sunday, 10, and Faith, 7.

Speaking about Hollywood’s sexual-harassment scandal, Kidman said she also “had #MeToo moments — since I was little!”

“But do I want to expose them in an article? No. Do they come out in my work? Absolutely. I’m open and raw. I want to have my well of experience and emotion tapped into, used — and I’m not just talking about sexual harassment,” she said.

“I’m talking about loss, death, the full array of life. But it has to be by the right people so it’s not abused again. I’m making a movie with Charlize Theron and Margot Robbie about Roger Ailes,” said Kidman, who plays Miss America head and former news anchor Gretchen Carlson.

Carlson has been at the forefront of sexual harassment issues for several years, garnering $20 million in settling a lawsuit against Ailes, who died in May 2017, almost a year after stepping down as Fox News chief.

In June, Kidman also opened up about the “massive grief” she felt after suffering miscarriages during her marriage to the “Mission Impossible” star.

She was 23 when she had an ectopic pregnancy, a condition in which the fertilized egg develops outside the uterus. Later, they tried to conceive again, but she suffered another miscarriage.

“There’s a huge, aching yearning. I know the yearning,” Kidman told Tatler magazine. “And the loss! The loss of a miscarriage is not talked about enough. That’s massive grief to women.”

“From the minute Tom and I were married, I wanted to have babies,” she also said. “And we lost a baby early on, so that was really very traumatic. And that’s when it came that we would adopt Bella.”
