Michael Douglas worries his children with Catherine Zeta Jones may have inherited addiction genes

He’s been to rehab for alcohol and drug addiction, lost a younger half-brother to an accidental overdose and seen his eldest son become a heroin addict.

And now Michael Douglas has expressed his fears that his two children with wife Catherine Zeta Jones may have inherited the same predisposition to addictions.

‘I think you learn about genetics, amongst other things, so you know you have to be more careful,’ he said, according to Britain’s Daily Express.

Douglas, 74, is dad to son Dylan, 18, and daughter Carys, 15.  

‘(Addiction is) is on both sides of my family so with my younger ones, they keep a much closer eye on it. I have ongoing conversations about it,’ Douglas explained. 

The Hollywood actor completed a 30-day stay at a rehab facility in 1991.

In 2004, his half-brother Eric, also an actor, passed away after a long struggle with alcohol and drugs that led to him being arrested on several occasions.

Douglas’s son Cameron, from his first marriage to Diandra Luker, has served seven and a half years in federal prison on drugs-related charges.

Troubled: The Hollywood star’s eldest son from his first marriage – Cameron, 39 – was a heroin addict and served seven and a half years in prison for drug-related crimes. He’s pictured with his famous dad and famous granddad Kirk earlier this month 

Cameron, 39, has now turned his lifer around, according to his famous father, and last December he and his girlfriend Viviane Thibes welcomed a baby boy together.

‘He’s fine, he’s doing really well. He’s a really good actor. He’s doing good,’ Douglas said.

In 2010, Douglas was diagnosed with tongue cancer and his treatment and recovery placed enormous stress on his relationship with his actress wife.

Zeta Jones checked herself in to hospital for treatment for depression in 2011 and again in 2013 and has spoken publicly about dealing with bipolar II disorder.

Next generation: Both Dylan and Carys want to follow their parents into the acting business. And Douglas told ET recently that he has one piece of advice for them: ‘Don’t do it if the only thing that’s going to make you happy is being a star’

He went on: ‘You gotta just love acting. The odds are so tough as it is, but if you have that passion, that joy. Look [at] me!  I’m in my seventies now and it’s so great.’ 

His latest role is as an aging acting coach on the Netflix original series the Kominsky Method in which he stars with Alan Arkin.
