Matthew Mellon was my business partner and love of my life

Art curator Stacy Engman says she was working on launching a line of arty, bejeweled sunglasses with banking heir and bitcoin mogul Matthew Mellon at the time he died — and the duo were also discussing other future plans.

Engman first became close friends with Mellon years ago while she was working on a masters at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London, and “we had a long history together,” she told Page Six of Mellon, that dated back to their days associating with ill-fated fashionista Isabella Blow, Alexander McQueen and Philip Treacy.

Years later, “we started dating,” Engman told us. “We had been engaged at one point,” but “it was really difficult with his addiction. We were off-and-on because of his different stints in rehab.”

In April, Mellon died in Cancun, Mexico, while headed to a rehab facility. He’d previously battled an opioid addiction of 80 pills a day and $100,000 a month and spent time in 2016 at Passages Malibu.

Before Mellon’s final tragic relapse this year, Engman recalled, the duo was moving ahead with plans for their eyewear collection — and more.

They met in Palm Beach, Fla., a week before his death. “We were talking about making it work,” she said. “We’d remained close the whole time. He was one of the great loves of my life.”

In Florida, they met at the Four Seasons Resort and Mellon had his security detail “tip everyone in C-notes, as he called them, to make everybody leave” for a private tête-à-tête .

Over tea, “we were talking about our future and moving on with our relationship — seeing what the future held and working on our sunglasses collection,” Engman said. “That was the last day I saw him. We were drinking green tea. He was the best he’d ever been . . . He was funny, charming, amazing and brilliant. He was working hard on overcoming his addiction.

Engman is continuing to work on her art exhibitions and the sunglasses line. The passion project, called Art Royalty, debuted at Paris haute couture fashion week, and is selling on Artsy, ranging from $700 to $75,000 for a pair with 20 carats of diamonds. A pair also appeared in a Helen Yarmak show Friday.
