Much like Keira Knightley before her, Kristen Bell has some thoughts on princess stories, specifically Snow White. Keira had an issue with Cinderella and The Little Mermaid teaching her daughter that you should wait around for a guy to rescue you, while Kristen Bell isn’t here for Snow White’s questionable lack of consent.
Kristen talked to Parents magazine about raising her two daughters, 5-year-old Lincoln and 3-year-old Delta. Some parents are exhausted at the end of the night, and rush through story time like monotone robots set at 2x speed. Not Kristen. Not only does she read the story of Snow White to her daughters, but she also hosts a small post-storytime comprehension workshop. Snow White is the story of a young girl with a jealous step-mother who tries to cut out her heart in the first act, so already we’re off to a winning start here. But it’s the issue of permission that has Kristen making teachable moments.
“Every time we close Snow White I look at my girls and ask, ‘Don’t you think it’s weird that Snow White didn’t ask the old witch why she needed to eat the apple? Or where she got that apple?’ I say, ‘I would never take food from a stranger, would you?’ And my kids are like, ‘No!’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m doing something right.’
‘Don’t you think that it’s weird that the prince kisses Snow White without her permission? Because you can not kiss someone if they’re sleeping!’”
Both of those are great examples of consent: don’t feel like you have to eat food offered to you by a strange old witch, and definitely side-eye any man that just waltzes up and plants one on an unconscious person. But it’s also a two-way street with Snow White. After she runs away, she finds a cottage that is clearly inhabited by people, goes in, cleans out all their stuff, and helps herself to a nap in their beds. Then when they arrive home, she starts judging them for living like slobs. I’m sorry Snow White, but the only way you can get away with that shit is if you say you’re there to film an episode of A&E’s Forest Hoarders.
