Joan Collins was put on slimming pills for being ‘too fat’

‘They were great!’ Dame Joan Collins reveals studio bosses put her on the same slimming pills as addict Judy Garland for being ‘too fat’

The addiction issues which overshadowed the majority of screen legend Judy Garland’s life and career are only too well known.

And Dame Joan Collins has revealed she had a lucky escape after being ordered to take the same potent slimming pills as the tragic Wizard of Oz star.

The Dynasty veteran, 83, appeared on This Morning on Thursday and explained how she was branded ‘too fat’ as a 20-year-old starlet starting out in Hollywood.

She was put on a Dexedrine, a central nervous system stimulant and amphetamine which is used to treat sleeping condition narcolepsy. Garland, who died aged 47 from a barbiturates overdose, was reportedly also given the same prescription.

The pills halted her appetite at once, having the desired effect on the star’s waistline – but rather than slam the studio honchos who risked her health, she insisted the drugs made her a one-woman machine.

She explained: ‘I was given the same slimming pills as Judy Garland.

‘When I first went I was about nine stone (126lbs) and the studio said you’re too fat you have to lose eight pounds. Which was hard to do because I was 20 and I liked my food.

‘And they gave me these little green pills and I used them all the time and I never ate.

My friend asked me what I was on and I showed her and she said, “Oh my god those are Dexedrine, that’s what Judy garland got hooked on.”

‘I took those to slim down, they were great. I wrote a play in one night on those.’

The actress has returned to the big screen in The Time Of Their Lives alongside her pal Pauline Collins.

The Shirley Valentine star revealed that they may be unlikely friends, but theirs is an enduring and fun relationship.

She explained: ‘I don’t know why but we just get along well.

‘When I did not win a Golden Globe (for Valentine), she said go on let’s go out to a party and we had a much better time than if I had won the Globe!’
