Jenifer Lewis sure knows how to make a statement. Instead of donning sparkly dresses and high heels like her peers, the Black-ish actress strutted down the 2018 Emmys red carpet in more comfortable attire. To show her support for former NFL player Colin Kaepernick, Lewis wore strictly Nike gear. Nike is facing backlash after announcing it made Kaepernick the face of its newest “Just do it” campaign. Many have threatened to boycott the brand for featuring the athlete, who is most famous for kneeling during the National Anthem during NFL games in 2016 in protest against police brutality.
Some social media users have documented themselves destroying their Nike gear. Some have burned their sneakers, and others are cutting the logos out of their clothes and underwear. However, many celebrities and athletes have shown their support for the campaign, including LeBron James, Serena Williams, Zendaya, Kathy Griffin, Chris Paul, and Chelsea Perretti. They’ve retweeted or reposted the ad and used accompanying hashtags like #ImWithKap, #JustDoIt, and #TeamNike.
At the 2018 Emmys, Lewis went all out to express her support. She sported a Nike sweater, Nike leggings, and Nike sneakers.
“I am wearing Nike to applaud them for supporting Colin Kaepernick and his protest against racial injustice and police brutality,” Lewis told Variety on the red carpet.
She went on to say she wore Nike as a way of showing her gratitude to the brand. “What can I do? What can I do that’s meaningful? I’ll wear Nike. I’ll wear Nike to say thank you. Thank you for leading the resistance! We need more corporate America to stand up also.”
She added, “Thank you, Colin. Thank you for all that you do. Thank you for being brave. Thank you for taking a knee. Thank you.”

The 70th annual Emmy Awards will be held at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on September 17, 2018. SNL’s Michael Che and Colin Jost will host the festivities, and actors Samira Wiley and Ryan Eggold announced this year’s nominations on July 12. The Handmaid’s Tale is up for Outstanding Drama Series for the second year in a row, and Game of Thrones stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage are both in the running for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
