Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum is apologizing after saying in a recent interview that a woman has never directed any of their theatrical releases because “there are not a lot of female directors period, and even less who are inclined to do horror.”
“Thank you everyone for calling me out on my dumb comments in that interview,” the 49-year-old producer wrote on Twitter on Thursday. “I made a stupid mistake. I spoke too quickly about a serious issue—an issue I am passionate about.”
“Over 50 percent of our audience is female. Over 50 percent of Blumhouse execs are women. Some of our most successful franchises are anchored by women, including the one opening tomorrow/today, led by the biggest female legend in this genre,” he continued, addressing Jamie Lee Curtis, who’s an executive producer on the new “Halloween” movie.
Blum finished off his note all but promising to hire a female director in the future.
“We have not done a good enough job working with female directors and it is not because they don’t exist. I heard from many today. The way my passion came out was dumb. And for that I am sorry. I will do better.”
During the original interview with Polygon, Blum has said he’s tried to get “Babadook” director Jennifer Kent to work on a movie with Blumhouse and also director Leigh Janiak, who confirmed to the outlet they’d had meetings, but had scheduling issues preventing her from signing on.
