James Arthur has revealed that he suffered a crippling anxiety attack while performing live on stage in Portugal on Friday night.
The former X Factor winner, 30, took to Twitter to reveal that he believed he was going to die during the horrific ordeal, which he said fans would not have noticed.
He tweeted: “I had an anxiety attack on stage in front of 12,000 people tonight and no one would’ve known.
“But I thought I was gunna die on stage which is maybe the scariest thing I’ve ever experienced in my life but it really made me appreciate my blessings.”
He added: “Thanks everyone for everything x.”
The singer was performing in front of a packed crowd at the Monte Verde Festival in Ribeira Grande, Azores.
Fans were quick to comfort the star on Twitter.
One wrote: “The fact that you are sharing that now, when nobody would have known, instantly puts you in the position of everyone having your back. The world is behind you @JamesArthur23 Never doubt that. Thank you for sharing your vulnerability.”
Another posted: “Everyone is probably gonna tell you that they love you and to feel better and stuff which is great but I just want to say that I know this is something that you fight with more than anyone even knows and I hope you know how strong you are to keep pushing. Praying for you.”
A third commented: “My heart just sunk, you strong amazing man. So much love for you.”
Last year, James revealed that he was still struggling to cope with his anxiety on a daily basis.
He told ITV’s Lorraine: “Anxiety is something very close to my heart, it’s something I suffer with daily as well.
"Music can really help that."
"The most important thing is being aware of the triggers.
"A lot of things can trigger my anxiety.
"Just to be above and aware of them is important."
He continued: "I’m not saying I’m a guru of life.
"I still struggle. But I try to be as positive as possible."
Mirror Online has contacted James’s rep for comment.
