Gordon Ramsay dons wacky ELF costume on MasterChef Junior

‘Tis the seasoned! Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay draws inspiration from Will Ferrell as he dons a wacky ELF costume during episode of MasterChef Junior

He’s gained a reputation for being a foul-mouthed hard-to-please mentor on such hit shows as Hell’s Kitchen, The F Word and MasterChef.

But Gordon Ramsay displayed a much softer side on US TV on Thursday, when he dressed up Will Ferrell’s classic character Buddy the Elf as part of a challenge on MasterChef Junior.

Wearing red-and-white stripey tights with a green jacket, curly wig and a festive pointy hat, the 50-year-old TV personality was the spitting image of the star of the 2003 comedy Elf during the Winter Wonderland-themed episode.

Joined in costume by his co-host Christina Tosi, they judged the young contestants’ efforts in creating a gingerbread house – referencing Buddy the Elf, who ate gingerbread for every meal.

To add to the fun for the contestants, Gordon showered them with buckets of candy before surprising them with celebrity guest chef Aaron Sanchez, who was dressed as a giant gingerbread man.

While he’s known for his sharp tongue, Gordon was on his best behaviour on Wednesday, when he appeared on daytime, family-friendly show This Morning.

In fact, he revealed that the vocabulary he’s come to be known for is never actually intentional.

‘I don’t mean to swear,’ he insisted to presenters Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes.

‘It’s just some of the muppets I work with [cause him to curse]. It’s an industry language and sometimes the odd naughty word slips out!’

He also revealed that his mother highly disapproves: ‘My mum said it’s not cool to swear!’

The chef – who can get away with it on late night series such as Hell’s Kitchen or indeed his stint guest hosting ITV’s The Nightly Show a couple of weeks ago – talked about appearing on daytime TV (his new series has a 3PM time slot).

‘I have to watch my Ps and Qs,’ he said. ‘There’re very similar words to naughty words.’

He then, surely causing a flurry of panic through the This Morning gallery producers, gave an example.

‘Like s**t-ake mushroom!’ he said with a wry smirk.

He was appearing on the morning chat show to promote his newest TV venture, Culinary Genius, which he has produced himself.

‘I have finally put my own little maverick competition together; the final three have this incredible cook off,’ he said. ‘I’m 50 now, I’ve been in front of those stoves a long time. If you go into it with a passion the job becomes a dream!’

Of his children, he said: ‘It’s that responsibility of handing it down to the kids, even if they don’t follow in my footsteps [professionally] but it’s important to be able to cook for yourself.’

One of his children – Matilda, who is 15 – has taken to cooking like her father, and even has her own TV series for CBBC.

‘She’s a little cracker,’ Gordon gushed with pride. ‘She’s doing well!’

Chat then turned to Gordon’s critique of Ruth’s attempt at making meringues over the Easter weekend.

‘First of all, the colour’s dreadful,’ he began. ‘They haven’t raised enough, it’s going to be too chewy inside!’

Clearly deflated, Ruth said: ‘I’m quite hurt. Seriously Gordon. that was my first ever meringue. I tried really hard!’

Eamonn, Ruth’s real life husband, couldn’t help but chime in at this point: ‘I told you we should have bought one!’

‘Don’t you start!’ Ruth snapped at her other half, before turning back to Gordon and saying: ‘I’ve gone right off you!’

Culinary Genius airs on weekdays at 3PM on ITV.
