Full-frontal nudity is still not the norm for Showcase

No penis for Girls: Full-frontal nudity is NOT approved for The Showcase Channel as Lena Dunham series cuts out raunchy scene

A recent episode of US series Big Little Lies saw Alexander Skarsgard don a prosthetic penis.

The scene which briefly featured the artificial part, was in accordance with Foxtel’s Showcase, where programs may need to be edited to comply with the maximum MA15+ classification.

However in Lena Dunham’s series Girls, a scene that saw her character touching male genitalia, was cut out in in its entirety, reiterating that full-frontal nudity is still not the norm for the pay-TV channel.

The Big Little Lies episode saw Alexander Skarsgard, who plays abusive husband Perry Wright, fight with onscreen wife Nicole Kidman (Celeste) in a shoe closet.

The character’s fly was undone, revealing a prosthetic appendage.

During the scene Perry got angry at Celeste for turning down his advances, as he tried to get frisky while the couple were preparing to go and see a play.

Celeste then whacked her husband in the groin with a tennis racquet.

However despite Alexander sporting an artificial part, he has spoken out in the past as to how comfortable he is with nudity.’I was 14 the first time I saw my dad wearing pants,’ he said in 2013 about his father, actor Stellan Skarsgard.

‘He was always naked. Always naked. When he wasn’t at the theater he would be at home cooking or just chilling with no clothes on.

‘Parents in the States freak out if their kids see a nipple or a butt cheek, but at the same time they’re OK with their kids watching people bash each other’s heads in with baseball bats,’ he said in an interview with OUT magazine.Meanwhile, despite Lena Dunham’s series Girls featuring on The Showcase Channel as well, a scene with frontal nudity was cut out in its entirety.

The deleted scene saw Chuck (Matthew Rhys) reveal his penis to Hannah (Lena Dunham) who awkwardly touches it.

Director of the series Richard Shepard told Vulture how important the scene was.

‘We had a lot of discussion, up to and including the idea of whether she would touch his penis or not. For me, it was deeply important that she do that,’ he told the publication.

‘In my mind, his character’s doing it not so much to be pleasured but to prove that he can do it.’
