Ellen Pompeo Hints at End of Grey’s Anatomy

We may be nearing the beginning of the end for Grey’s Anatomy.

So says one of the most reliable sources out there.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in anticipation of Grey’s Anatomy Season 15 (yes, 15!!!!!!!), star Ellen Pompeo gave a revealing answer when asked about when she might exit the series.

“I’m clearly not prepared right now to make any formal announcement about my future on the show,” Pompeo told EW, adding, much to the likely chagrin of fans around the world;

“That’s something that Shonda Rhimes and I will do together. But I’m feeling like we have told the majority of the stories that we can tell.”

Pompeo signed a two-year contract this spring and basically says here that she doesn’t see herself signing a new one.

If that decision holds, it would mean Grey’s Anatomy comes to an end in May of 2020, following 16 seasons on the air.

“I’m feeling like we’re coming to the end of the stories that we’ve told and that we can tell,” Pomeo reiterated to EW in this interview, teasing new projects she’dl like to work on…

… and/or more time she’d like to spend with her family.

“I’m really excited to do some new things, it’s about time that I mix it up and I’m really excited about my producing career, and I’m definitely looking for a change.”

Pompeo has said previously that she’s far more psyched to produce down the line than act.

It’s possible she never even gets in front of the camera again after Grey’s Anatomy.

“My children are getting older so I want to be more available to them now,” she says.

“I can’t be an absentee mom if they’re teenagers, I have to be around to whip their butts. So it’s definitely time for change in my life. I’m really looking forward to it and that’s the beauty of my situation.”

Season 15 will see more cast changes for a show that has evolved often over the years, outside of mainstays Pompeo, Justim Chambers and Chandra Wilson.

Neither Sarah Drew nor Jessica Capshow will reprise their roles this fall.

Pompeo will be around untilt the very end, however.

That much is certain.

And Rhimes has said that as soon as her lead is done with the show, the show itself will be done.

There’s no Grey’s Anatomy without Meredith Grey, let’s be honest here.

Concludes Pompeo in this EW preview/tease/chat:

I have definitely played this out for everything that I possibly could. I’ve given it 200 percent of my energy and my love and my time and my commitment and my dedication.

I still am fighting every day to make everything surrounding this show, the quality of the show, the storytelling, I’m still fighting for everything I can, for the quality to be good, for the actors to be happy, whether that’s well received or not.

I still care very much about the show and I think that it takes a lot of energy.

So at some point I have to wrap it up.

But not before the following storylines play out over the next set of new episodes, which kick off this Thursday, September 27 at 8/7c!
