Demi Lovato’s Mother: I Thought My Child Was Going to Die

We may not be hearing from Demi Lovato for a very long time, considering the singer is reportedly seeking extensive rehabilitation at an undisclosed location…

… but someone who knows the singer very well has spoken out for the first time since Lovato overdosed on July 24.

What was this experience like for Lovato’s mother, Dianna De La Garza, to go through?

Reportedly with her daughter’s blessing, De La Garza spoke this week to Newsmax TV, talking at length about her reaction to Demi’s near-death experience, both in the moment, shortly afterward and now, almost two months later.

“It’s still a really difficult thing to talk about,”De La Garz says, adding:

“I literally start to shake a little bit when I start to remember what happened that day. I was actually looking at my phone and all these texts started coming in.”

Lovato was in critical condition for two days following an overdose of what remains an unknown substance.

She had spent the previous evening out with friends and then texted her drug dealer, who recently admitted to going over to her house and giving her … something.

Asked how she learned about the situation,De La Garza told the aforementioned outlet that she started to receive text messages that read as follows:

“I just heard the news, I’m so sorry, I’m praying for your family, I’m praying for Demi.’

“I was in shock. I thought, what is going on? … My heart just dropped.”

Then, her phone rang…

“I got a phone call from Demi’s assistant at the time, Kelsey. … I answered the phone and Kelsey was rambling like she had obviously been through something terrible, and she said, ‘I need to tell you what’s going on … you’re going to see a report come out.’

“I stopped her and said, ‘Kelsey, just tell me what’s going on.’

“The next words that came out of her mouth were words … that are so difficult to hear as a parent.

“She said Demi overdosed. So I was in shock, I didn’t know what to say. It was something I never, ever expected to hear as a parent about any of my kids. … I said, ‘Is she OK?’

“And she stopped for a second and she said, ‘She’s conscious, but she’s not talking.’ I knew at that point that we were in trouble.”

Kelsey, Demi’s assistant, is the person who found Demi unconscious in bed and called 911.

“We ran into the emergency room to be by her side, and she just didn’t look good, at all,” Demi’s mom continues.

“She was in bad shape, but I said to her, ‘Demi, I’m here. I love you.’ At that point, she said back to me, ‘I love you too.’

“From that point on, I never allowed myself to ever think that things weren’t going to be OK.”

But De La Garza admits that the doctors weren’t certain.

Demi really did come close to dying.

“We just didn’t know for two days if she was going to make it or not,” De La Garza said.

“I was very concerned, and I was trying to be strong for her and for her sisters and for my family back home. … I just feel like the reason she’s alive today is because of the millions of prayers that went up that day.”

De La Garza, of course, also gives full credit to her team of doctors.

So, how is Lovato at the moment?

Details of her rehab stint are understandably being kept under wraps, but her mother at least can say the following as some comfort to fans:

“I can honestly say today that she is doing really well.

“She’s happy, she’s healthy, she’s working on her sobriety, and she’s getting the help she needs.

“That in itself encourages me about her future and the future of our family.”

Thank goodness.

We’ve always admired how up front Lovato has been about her struggles and we continue to send her the very best wishes.

In conclusion, De La Garza said she’s now become an “accidental spokeswoman” for the opioid crisis after going through this frightening ordeal, telling the outlet:

“I want to do whatever I can in this fight and fight with whoever will help me.”
