Charlie Hunnam talks tying the knot at age 18

Charlie Hunnam says getting hitched to actress Katharine Towne at age 18 ended in three ‘terrible, painful years’ of marriage

He was young and had fallen in love for the first time in his life.

But Charlie Hunnam says tying the knot at the age of 18 following a whirlwind, three week romance with actress Katharine Towne led to ‘three terrible, painful years’ of marriage, the actor revealed to AP.

Charlie, 37, says he married Katharine at two in the morning at a chapel in Las Vegas, and had fallen head over heelsafter meeting her at a Dawson’s Creek audition.

The young couple’s marriage lasted from 1999 to 2002.

‘The first time I was ever in Vegas I got married, which didn’t turn out that well,’ he told AP at CinemaCon last month.

‘I’d known the girl for three weeks, and we’d fallen madly in love, it was the first time I’d ever been in love,’ he said.

The Sons Of Anarchy actor explained how they attempted to rationalize getting married so quickly.

‘We came to Vegas because, in our 18-year-old minds, we thought, “What if we never see each other again? Let’s get married! And then we’ll have to see each other again, even if it’s just to get divorced!”‘

‘And so we came to Vegas, but I couldn’t even get a drink! So I didn’t think I was going to actually be able to get married! I thought it was just a lark! But we sort of psyched ourselves into it and then at two o’clock in the morning, we ended up getting married.’

Charlie said they tied the knot at the Silver Bell Wedding Chapel, and said he even remembered the wedding was officiated by Reverend RJ Cotton.

The actor said the marriage lasted for ‘three terrible, painful expensive years.’

‘But I got the cats at the end of it, so that was good. There was a small victory!’

Charlie has been in a long-term relationship with jewelry designer Morgana McNelis since 2005.

And he’s in it for the long haul.

Last year, the actor defended his girlfriend after she wound up on the receiving end of bullying comments online, and said he hoped to spend the ‘next sixty years’ with her.

‘This is a girl I love very much and have spent the last eleven years of my life with and hope to spend the next sixty years,’ he explained via a statement on Facebook. ‘She has been my loyal and supportive partner long before I had any success or money.’
