Carragher reveals who made Liverpool sign Van Dijk

Jamie Carragher has revealed how Troy Deeney may have helped convince Jurgen Klopp he needed to sign Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool ‘s defense has been immense since the £75m centre-back arrived at Anfield, solving what had become a real weakness of the team.

But Carragher insists if it was not for Deeney having his way with Klopp’s Reds in the early stages of his time on Merseyside, Van Dijk may not have joined.

“You’re talking about Liverpool, I think it’s interesting,” Carragher said on Monday Night Football.

“I think one of Jurgen Klopp’s first games, or certainly a real eye-opener to the Premier League, was you [Troy Deeney].

“That Watford, was it 3-1, 3-0? You basically battered Liverpool’s defence that day.

“It’s probably taken two or three years to get it exactly where Jurgen Klopp wants it to be.

“But I think that day at Vicarage Road was probably a real eye-opener for Jurgen Klopp, thinking ‘the players I’ve got here can’t cope with no disrespect, with Watford, not even Manchester United or Chelsea’.

“I think you played a big part in making sure he changed that team.”
