The Biggest Loser’s Matt faces fear of commercial gyms

‘I don’t deserve to be here!’ The Biggest Loser’s 78kg contestant Nikki breaks down as she considers quitting the competition over ‘self-doubt’

On Thursday’s episode of The Biggest Loser, 78 kilo contestant Nikki struggles to stay in the competition due to her self doubt. After a workout with trainer Libby Babet, she admits, ‘I have had a lot of self-doubt this week. My mind’s really wanting to give up at this point in the competition and I’m really struggling with it.’I’m always feeling like I just want to give up and that when my body’s hurting I can’t push through. It’s a feeling of just no belief in myself whatsoever and questioning whether I even deserve to be here.’

Libby takes her aside and shows her a rock which is plain on one side and studded with crystal on the other, comparing the rock to Nikki.Libby tells her, ‘When you flip that rock over, the other side of it is just beautiful. It’s crystals and sparkles and wonderful things.

‘And that’s what everyone else sees in Nikki and I want this rock to demonstrate a little bit how she sees herself versus what the rest of us are really seeing.

‘And it’s not… ..just how you look, but you are gorgeous. You look like Snow White to me. And finally you’re gonna have the body that makes you feel that way.’

Nikki breaks down in tears after the speech but agrees to keep trying and stay in the competition.Earlier in the episode, Matt faced his very confronting phobia of gyms.

Trainer Shannan Ponton announces the teams will have an off-site training session with Hayden Quinn at The Cube, on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, which sets Matt off. He explains, ‘It’s bit confronting, actually. I’m actually feeling really scared right now. I’ve had a fear of gyms for so long.’When I go near a gym, it’s been an absolute fear of mine to the point that even the smell creates anxiety. I feel that I’m going into a world of unknown, where I’m gonna be judged.’

However once he’s in the gym that he so feared, Matt takes out the title of the fittest strong man in the Blue Team.Matt says, ‘Who would have ever thunk it? 51 seconds, G! Whoo-whoo-whoo!’Josh, who is injured, is awaiting the results of his scan to see if he broke any ribs or has a more serious injury than bruising.

He eventually gets very bad news when he learns from the medic that his rib is in fact fractured and the injury means that he cannot take part in any team challenges.Josh is devastated, saying, ‘If I can’t compete, then I can’t bring anything to the team. If I can’t train hard, I can’t lose the weight to help in the weigh-in. This is the worst possible result.’

The group undergo a visualizing exercise during which they imagine they are on a bike and pushing through discomfort. Both the orange and blue teams then face a three tiered challenge, with the winner getting a one kilo advantage at weigh in.

The challenge includes a rope, rowing and weight lifting challenge and Amy brings it home, winning it for the blue team and winning them a one kilo weight advantage.
