Armie Hammer apologizes for his ‘unnecessary social commentary’ on ‘selfie culture’

Stan Lee passed away earlier this week. It was sad for millions of people who loved him and the characters he created throughout his lengthy career. Many comic-book fans (celebrities and non-celebrities) posted tributes to Stan Lee on social media, and many of them included personal photos they had of themselves with Stan, from movie sets or Comic Con or meet-and-greets or signings and a million other events. Stan Lee was known as a super-approachable guy who loved his fans, so of course a lot of people had personal photos of him. All of that rubbed Armie Hammer the wrong way. Poor petty Armie went off on Twitter about how people were including photos of themselves with Stan Lee. He’s deleted the tweets now, but here are the screencaps:

So people had feelings about Armie and how he came across like a douchebag and like he was sitting around, judging how people grieve for an icon. Jeffrey Dean Morgan called Armie out soon after Armie’s tweets went viral, writing: “Looks like you found a way to use others ways of mourning and their memories to draw some attention to yourself. You sound like a real asshat.” So Armie did delete the offending tweets, and issued an apology:

“While attempting to provide unnecessary social commentary about the current selfie culture, I (in true asshat form — thank you Jeffrey Dean Morgan) inadvertently offended many who were genuinely grieving the loss of a true icon. I want to apologize from the bottom of my heart and will be working on my Twitter impulse control.”

So ends the boy beef? What I love about this whole mess was that it just reminded everyone that Armie Hammer is totally That Guy. He’s a rich, privileged dude who thinks he’s Jesus and he probably truly thought he was making some kind of brilliant point about “selfie culture.” He left his tweets up for a while too, like he read the criticism and was like “NUH UH I AM MAKING THE BEST ARGUMENT RIGHT NOW.” And then I guess his publicist called him and screamed at him.
