Ariana Grande Named the Youngest Headliner in History at 2019 Coachella Festival

Ariana Grande’s successful run — at least in terms of her musical career — just keeps on breaking new ground. That continued yesterday when it was announced that the pop singer will make history as the youngest performer ever to headline Coachella. She will be just 25 years old on the days when the next festival will fall.

Ariana is, in fact, only the fourth woman to receive a coveted top spot since the festival began in 1999, following Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Björk who also headlined the event. Billboard reports that it took a full decade after Bjork headlined the event in 2007 before the second woman, Lady Gaga, got top billing again in 2017.

So, after not having women headliners for most of the festival’s history, Coachella will now have a female headliner for the third year in a row when Ariana takes the stage.

While some may see that as a sign of social progress, others will also note that there is a strong business driver involved. the annual music and arts festival has seen a big increase in women’s attendance over the last several years and is likely tuning its roster to the tastes of its current audience.

Ariana’s manager, Scooter Braun, could not help pointing out the achievement in a post to his Instagram account, sharing a picture of the lineup with Ariana’s name on-top for day three of the event. “4th female to ever headline,” Scooter wrote. “and the youngest headliner in the history of the festival!”

The other headliners for the 2019 festival include Childish Gambino and Tame Impala.
