Ariana Grande Admits Writing ‘No Tears Left To Cry’ May Have Triggered Her Bad Year

It’s been a long and bumpy year for singer Ariana Grande, who released her fourth studio album Sweetener, mourned the death of her ex-boyfriend and rapper Mac Miller, and broke off her engagement to Pete Davidson after a short-lived romance, reports Entertainment Tonight.

The 25-year-old singer released several hit singles on her album, including the lead single “No Tears Left To Cry.” She recently revealed in a tongue-in-cheek Twitter post that the light, optimistic, and hopeful song may have come back and bitten her throughout the rest of the year.

“Remember when I was like, ‘Hey, I have no tears left to cry,’ and the universe was like, ‘HAAAAAAAAA, b**ch u thought.’”

Ariana wrote the song after a terrorist detonated a bomb outside a concert venue in Manchester, England, where she was performing during her Dangerous Woman Tour in 2017, killing 22 people and injuring hundreds more. Following the emotional and traumatic experience, the “God is a Woman” singer was reluctant to return to writing and recording new music. When she finally returned to the studio, she wanted to write a song about resilience and hope.

The pop singer was unaware at the time of the release of “No Tears Left To Cry” that the emotional roller coaster she had been riding was not yet ready to stop. On September 7, rapper Mac Miller died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol at the age of 26. Though Ariana and Mac had split up a few months earlier after two years of dating, she took his death incredibly hard.

According to Entertainment Tonight, a close source to the singer revealed after Mac’s death, “Although the two ended their relationship, Ariana always shared a deep connection with Mac and wanted nothing but the best for him. Ariana is very upset.”

While mourning for her ex, Ariana and her fiancé, actor Pete Davidson, broke off their engagement after just a few months of being together. They announced their engagement just several weeks after starting dating this past spring and called it quits in October.

Despite the ups and downs of the year, Ariana has stayed strong and served as an inspiration to her millions of fans. She recently released her newest single, “thank u, next,” a tribute to her past loves and the lessons she’s taken from them.

The singer gave her debut performance of “thank u, next” on Wednesday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
