Agnès Varda sent ‘a photograph of potatoes’ to Gucci’s Alessandro Michele

The only thing Agnès Varda loves more than Gucci is an extraordinarily-shaped spud.

The French New Wave director has become the fashion set’s newest darling, fronting Interview magazine’s first issue since the publication filed for bankruptcy and sitting front row at Gucci’s runway show on Monday.

Apparently, Varda is a fan of the Italian brand’s creative director, Alessandro Michele. “I found him very handsome, very intelligent, very cultivated. I enjoyed spending half-an-hour with him,” Varda told Women’s Wear Daily of meeting the designer. “He spoiled me and I sent him a photograph of potatoes.”

Why? “Because I photograph exceptional potatoes,” Varda continued. “They are heart-shaped.”

So if next season’s Gucci invite comes in the form of a heart-shaped tuber, you’ll know who to thank for the inspiration.
