Redheads, silver foxes, baldies, and curly-haired people, rejoice! Turns out the Unicode Technical Committee – the organization that creates emojis – has not forgotten about your existence. After years of waiting (and wondering), they’re considering four new emojis to add a little hair diversity to their lineup.
According to Mashable, a proposal for the new emojis mentions that people have been pretty much begging for a redhead emoji, but it has been “a challenge to address due to a number of competing implementation options.”
It looks like Unicode may be taking on the challenge, as well as exploring options for those of us with more textured hair, white hair, or none at all. The emojis are being considered as part of a mid-2018 rollout, but if you ask me, they couldn’t come soon enough. As a curly girl, I’ve been waiting for cute little emoji that actually matches my hair texture to use on good hair days .
Mashable also mentions that Unicode mulled over the redhead emoji option earlier this year, and came to the conclusion that a separate one would be best, thought I must admit, the thought of having an emoji with curly red hair sounds so sweet. Maybe in 2019?
Unicode has been pretty open to expanding their range of emojis to be more inclusive. In November, it was announced that amongst the submissions for possible emojis was one of a woman in a hijab. “Roughly 550 million Muslim women on this earth pride themselves on wearing the hijab. With this enormous number of people, not a single space on the keyboard is reserved for them,” 15-year-old hijab emoji advocate Rayouf Alhumedhi wrote in a proposal.
We love the idea of Unicode taking steps towards more diversity – more options are always welcome ’round these parts!
