While it remains to be seen which trends will sink and swim, we can safely say Kaia Gerber was an instant hit on the spring/summer 2018 catwalks. Following in the most-talked-about-fashion-week-model footsteps of Cara Delevingne, Kendall Jenner and the Hadid sisters, Gerber is this season’s hottest ticket. It helps – of course – that she’s the daughter of original Super Cindy Crawford, however she’s redefining the famous off-spring, It Girl status and working her (teeny) ass off to gain critical acclaim. While there’s no mistaking Gerber’s classic all-American look, to demonstrate her versatility here are some stand-out beauty moves she’s modelled this season.
Combining a natural-looking complexion with prominent eyeliner, Gerber rocked Cleopatra-inspired liner flicks, created by Diane Kendal using Marc Jacobs Beauty’s Fineliner, £19 and Highliner, £20, both in Blacquer. Her glossy black hair wrap was the hero accessory, which (somewhat controversially) lead hairstylist Guido Palau said was inspired by 70s vintage glam. We’re sure there’s more than a nod to African American culture there, too.
While it looked like Gerber had her hair dyed inky blue for the catwalk, in fact the style was a dyed clip-in fringe. Stylist Sam Mcknight revealed to Allure that it came about because “during the make-up test, Peter [Philips, the lead make-up artist] had an array of liner marks on the back of his hand that were all sorts of greens and blues. So we decided to dye the hair pieces in similar tones.” Heavy sweeping eyeliner featured again, against an otherwise neutral palette of make-up, cementing liquid liner as a look to stay.
The inspiration at Moschino was “what a cute boy”, and make-up was used to accentuate Gerber’s delicate features, complementing the air of androgyny achieved with a short wig and studded accessories. Her brows were darkened by two shades using MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof Brow Set, £14.50, and her lips over-lined with MAC Modern Twist Kajal Liner in Groundbreaker, £14.50. She pulled it off with aplomb.
